A tempting voice, a lush bass, a swinging piano. Music your feet want to dance to – and paint brushes too! And so they do indeed: live in front of the astonished spectators, they conjure to the beat an equally exuberant dancing couple on the screen. The brush strokes are performed by the virtuous Robert Nippoldt and are not the only drawing tools to make an appearance in this special combination of art and music. With chalk, pencil, and ink, the stars of the Weimar Republic are resurrected in just a few moments, and the Gedächtniskirche gets its roof back. Thanks to the camera and the large-scale projection, the spectators are very close to each stroke, submitted to the paper by the casual elegance of the artist’s hand.

The drawings projected onto the screen are however only part of the diverse repertoire. Impressively created – in perfect symbiosis of sound, drama and image – a paper cutting staging of the Brechtian pirate Jenny is set in scene. The Comedian Harmonists dissect a concert grand in visual and audible ecstasy. You are invited to wander through the capital with open eyes and a slapstick number pays homage to the beginnings of sound film. Amazing how you can get to know all of the Chancellors of the Weimar Republic in just three minutes!

All this is enlivened, commented on, and inspired by the three fabulous musicians of the Trio Größenwahn, who, with verve and humor, breathe new life into classics of the day. Even an original antique keyboard instrument experiences a surprising second spring under the nimble hands of singer Lotta Stein. It is the zeitgeist of a special time between the world wars that invigorates the artists dressed in style on this evening.

A time that has lost none of its charm and welcomes us with open arms. Follow this invitation, and, at the end of this enjoyable excursion, you shall have a glimpse of what it may have felt like back in the roaring twenties.

ROBERT NIPPOLDT (live drawings, silhouettes, animations, brush performance, graphic drama) The draftsman and book artist is well known for his internationally acclaimed book trilogy “Gangster, Jazz & Hollywood” about 1920s America, as well as drawings for the New Yorker and Time Magazine. Most recently, his award-winning book on 1920s Berlin appeared. His studio is located at the old freight station of Münster.

TRIO GRÖßENWAHN (vocals, piano, contrabass, snare drum, accordion, flute, tabla, dance)

Lotta Stein (vocals), Christian Manchen (piano) and Christoph Kopp (contrabass) have been successful for years and are active with various formations in the music scene. As Trio Größenwahn, they devote themselves entirely to the 1920s and 1930s. As virtuous as respectful, they carry the classics of yesteryear with their snappy interpretations into the present day.
